Artwork PreparationThis information is aimed at people who have very little or no knowledge of computer graphics, who just want a good sign. To this end we have kept technical jargon to a minimum. Most signage these days is designed using computer graphics programs. The print industry and graphic arts industries use the same programs, so information, that is artwork, logos etc are transportable between these industries. There are two major file types used in the graphics industry - Vector files and Bitmap files. Vector Files Vector files are made up of many individual objects which are mathematically defined. This means Vector graphics are best for our use, as they don’t loose definition or resolution when you change their size and so print perfectly every time. Common extensions for Vector files are CDR, AI and EPS. Some PDF files may be Vector files depending on the version. If we get artwork as Vector files we are happy chappies. Vector graphics can be increased in size and still print perfectly. Bitmap Files Bitmap files are made up of dots, hundreds of them. The number of dots for a given size of image determines the quality or amount of information in the image. The difficulty for us is that the machines we use to cut lettering and shapes don’t like dots so we have to physically redraw the image before we can cut it. That said, Bitmap files may be fine for printing provided there are enough dots of information, commonly referred as resolution. The problem is that no matter what you do to an image the number of dots of information remains the same. Images that will print perfectly for a given size say 25mm x 25mm may look terrible if the size is increased to 300mm x 300mm. For this reason the perfect image you download from the internet will be far from perfect when you try to print it on your sticker or sign. Preferred Bitmap extensions are TIF, PSD, and PDF. Other extensions such as BMP and JPG can be used but the results are generally not as good. If a Bitmap image does not have high enough resolution (ie does not have enough dots per inch) it may print fuzzy and jagged when we try to print it. In Summary If you, or a graphic artist, can send us your artwork as a Vector file we are laughing. If you have to send us a Bitmap file send it at the highest possible resolution and preferably as a TIF, PSD, or PDF format. Just remember if you need help, information or advice on sending artwork we are only a phone call away. We know everyone is not a graphics and computer buff so please call if you need help. In the meantime, always remember the three rules of good signage.
